Personal Record

Two days in a row I have hit huge PRs (personal records).
Yesterday I wanted to get in a workout to firm my muscles before putting on a swim suit. First, I hit the treadmill for a run. I did a 5 minute walking warmed up for 5 minutes and then started to run.   I was feeling pretty good so I pushed myself to keep going further than normal,  I was trying to take deep breaths but it seemed like I couldn't get them to go into my lungs.  I would take a deep breath and hold it and breath out two breaths and it seemed to help (the two breaths helps prevent or get rid  of cramps).  I ran for 1.5 miles total a new personal best!

Today I wanted to run and see how far I could go.  I started with my 5 minute walking warm up again and started to run.  I ran an entire 5K today (3.2 miles)! For some this may not seem like a lot but after being excited after going half that distance yesterday and having this as my goal it was a pretty exciting day.  My husband was so sweet, we came together and after he was done lifting he jumped on the treadmill next to me and told me to go as long as I could go.  He ended up walking 1.5 miles before I was done.

As soon as I got home I started looking for 5k races to sign up for in our area.  I think I am going to sign up for about one a month to keep  me motivated to run and keep my miles up.

If you are just starting out or want the increase your mileage I would encourage you to slow down your pace. It took me an hour to do 3.5 miles (including my warm up) but I was able to run the entire time.  If I would have run faster there is no way I would have been able to run for so long.  I also really like running on a treadmill when starting out so that you can keep a constant pace.

  1. Been a long time lurker, sometime commenter. Congrats on the 3.1 miles. That is awesome. I am doing my 1st 5K in 2 wks and started running about the same time you did. For me it's all about finishing and not time. Just so you know I have used a lot of your running tips to train for my 5K (the book on tape being the best).
